AMU Alumnus Donates Advanced Ultrasound System to Strengthen Cancer Care at JNMC

Aligarh Muslim University gets advanced ultrasound system
Aligarh, January 8: In a significant advancement for cancer diagnosis and treatment, the Department of Radiation Oncology at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been enriched with a state-of-the-art ultrasound system equipped with advanced Color Doppler technology. The sophisticated equipment has been donated by AMU alumnus Dr Shams Iqbal (MBBS, 1997 batch), Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Harvard–Massachusetts General Hospital, USA, reaffirming the enduring bond between the university and its global alumni community.

The newly inaugurated ultrasound system is expected to play a transformative role in modern cancer care at JNMC. Designed to provide high-resolution, real-time imaging, the machine will significantly enhance precision in image-guided brachytherapy, particularly for prostate and cervical cancers, as well as other solid soft-tissue tumours. By enabling accurate placement of radioactive seeds and beads, the technology will contribute to improved treatment outcomes, reduced procedural risks, and enhanced patient safety.

While inaugurating ultrasound system the Vice-Chancellor of AMU, Prof Naima Khatoon, lauded Dr Shams Iqbal’s contribution and described it as a shining example of alumni commitment to institutional growth. “This thoughtful donation reflects the deep sense of gratitude and responsibility that our alumni continue to show towards their alma mater. Such initiatives not only strengthen our healthcare infrastructure but also inspire others across the globe to actively contribute to AMU’s academic and medical advancement,” she remarked.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Shams Iqbal expressed pride in giving back to the institution that laid the foundation of his medical career. He also demonstrated the clinical applications of the ultrasound system, highlighting its role in contemporary oncological practice and precision-based cancer therapies.

Prof Mohd Akram, Chairman, Department of Radiation Oncology, conveyed gratitude to the donor and emphasized that alumni-supported initiatives are vital for elevating cancer care services at JNMC. He expressed optimism that sustained collaboration would pave the way for the development of a dedicated comprehensive cancer centre at the institution.
The programme witnessed the presence of senior faculty members and administrators, including Prof Mohd Khalid, Dean, Faculty of Medicine; Prof Naiyar Asif, Medical Superintendent, JNMCH; Dr Zeya Siddiqui, Additional Medical Superintendent; and Prof Mehtab Ahmad Chairman, Department of Radiodiagnosis.
