I presently live in New York, and work as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist for the New York State Office of Mental Health. As a psychiatrist, my expertise includes assessment and treatment of complex and refractory psychiatric illnesses. I also serve Vice-president of the Medical Staff Organization in an administrative capacity. What has stood by me throughout these years is the strong education and sense of belonging bestowed by my alma mater, JNMC at AMU (1996 – 2002). I did my Residency training in General Psychiatry from Creedmoor Psychiatric Center/ NY Presbyterian. I did Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from Northwell-Hofstra program.
As Rumi said, “Warmed by a sun inside, you can see wonders”, I believe that the warmth inside can be enhanced by surrounding yourself with a loving and supportive community. Being in a home away from home, I have attempted to participate in AMU alumni platforms. I have served as the Secretary of FAAA, Secretary of AAANY, and presently as Executive Committee Member of AMAANA.
In a small attempt to create mental health awareness in our community, I have presented lectures on Adolescent Mental Health Awareness (FAAA NY, 2023), and Trauma & PTSD (FAAA Atlanta, 2024). My article on Depression was published in the Times Of India (2020). My interview on the basics of psychiatric assessment and treatment, given to Jawaid Danish sahab (AMU alumnus), is available online in Urdu language. My hobbies include creating new memories and experiences via travel, reading, and socialization.
Dr. Barina Aqil’s journey began at Aligarh Muslim University, where getting to class meant navigating traffic, puddles, and the occasional cow with more confidence than most residents handle a bone marrow slide. She quickly found her groove in debates that spanned lymphoma subtypes, political theories, and food recipes—embracing the structured chaos that now defines both her diagnostic style and her soul.
As part of AMAANA’s executive committee, she answered the alumni Bat-Signal and helped beam clinical expertise back to JNMCH through tumor boards and workshops with an aim thatthey can diagnose faster than she can find parking at a downtown conference.
By day, she squints at cells that refuse to behave. By night, she crafts analogies to make sense of them.
Known for turning diagnostic dilemmas into insights—and occasionally punchlines—Barina brings clari-
ty, curiosity, and a touch of theatrical flair to everything she does.
Her diagnostic philosophy?
“Seven pathologists, seven opinions, and one atypical lymphocyte silently judging us all. Welcome to
hematopathology.”
